Let me just start off by saying that my opinions do not necessarily reflect the opinions of all 2ShotsOfGeek members and yadayada, that stuff.
The big event that we all know as E3 occurred just last week, and quite honestly, I was overall disappointed with the event. The short version as to why I found the show to lack hype factor is this, basically (be sure to check out the links in the description as well; they are easily some of the best gaming-related gifs I have ever come across). As for the long-winded, gamer-rage-filled version, you can hit the jump below.
With just about every conference at E3, the main focus seemed to be about everything BUT actual video games. Smartglass? Sure, I guess that’s cool for gamers with tablets. Nintendo Land? Uh, ok…. Wonderbook? If I can’t use it for a research paper, then I’m personally not going to bother with it. Internet Explorer on Xbox? Why in the name of God Rugal was that even considered? I used to look at E3 as a cool event to watch and check out awesome new GAMES, not expensive, overrated gimmicky pieces of hardware that make life slightly (emphasis on slightly) more convenient. Where is my Last Guardian news? New Fire Emblem coverage? Wii U Smash Brothers? Darkstalkers 4? Some other popular upcoming game that I can’t think about right now? Sure, Watch_Dogs was pretty awesome, and The Last of Us got me hyped up, but honestly, those are the only notable things that I remember about E3 2012 (aside from every FPS shown during the press conferences looking pretty much like the same game, but that’s a topic for another rant).
I just want something new and interesting. Something that will actually appeal to my inner gamer, not something that will allow me to watch ESPN on my tablet from my Xbox while I play a game on said Xbox when a computer is right next me. I probably exaggerated that point, but you see where I’m getting at. Most of us gamers prefer a game that is fun and will engage us for hours on end as apposed to some gimmick that only exists simply because it’s cool or fancy.
Ultimately, E3 is just a show and does not directly affect what games will actually end up coming out. While it would have been nice to see awesome GAMEPLAY footage (and not just very pretty CGI movies, but I digress), we geeks can only wait and see what is in store for us in the future.
