I’ve never been the biggest fan of racing games. With very few exceptions, mainly Forza and Burnout, I’ve never been that big of a fan. I know I still need to get Blur though, and I don’t count Mario Kart as a regular racing game, and I do love Mario Kart. I have noticed that these games are better on mobile devices. I really enjoyed playing Asphalt 5 on my Xperia Play last year. It’s been a while since I’ve had a racing game on my phone, and through the magic of Google Play’s recommendations, I came across DroidHen’s Turbo Kids. It’s a racing game involving…kids. So join me, as I bring another Android game review. Let’s give this one a shot.
Turbo Kids two main modes: season and tournament. In season mode, you go through several levels in four different worlds. Your character moves on his own, and you have two main functions: jump and attack. Tap the left half of the screen to jump, the right side to attack. You jump to avoid pits and enemy attack, and you attack with different power ups to slow down and sabotage the opposition. Each race is pretty exciting, and has a Mario Kart like feeling. The first weapon you get is a snowball, and it freezes on contact. The second weapon is a spiked ball that, if it connects, switches places between you and the victim. You can imagine the mayhem this creates. It makes the races lots of fun, and very chaotic. Every time you race, you get coins, which you use to upgrade your equipment. This affects your speed, energy, and other things. Depending on what place you get, you get a certain number of stars each race as well. You use these to upgrade your power ups, which include moonwalk, and turbo mode.
Each race takes about a minute, but rewards you even if you don’t win. This compels you to keep on playing. You unlock different forms in tournament mode as you progress through the seasons. The first one is a regular race, where you have to finish sixth or higher. The next one is called relay, and it is a race against the clock. As long as you reach a certain checkpoint, you get a star and more coins. There are two more modes, but I need to finish the next two seasons to unlock them. Turbo Kids is a free download, using the in-game ad and app purchase model. You can purchase more coins or gold for cash, and there are occasional ads for other DroidHen games on occasion. It is very unobtrusive, and doesn’t bother at all. Turbo Kids is a very entertaining and polished game, with no noticeable slowdown. DroidHen continues their quality release schedule with Turbo Kids. I recommend you give this a shot, it’s free after all! I give it an 8/10 score.
