O Captain, my Captain…

“You’re only given a little spark of madness. You mustn’t lose it.”  ~R W

A legend has passed and it weighs heavy on my heart to write this. Robin Williams is no longer with this world.

He was found dead in his California home on Monday. He leaves behind a family, friends and a legacy. Regardless of what you think of his choice,  you have been impacted by him at some point in his career.

Wow, this is a lot harder to write than I thought it would be.

I don’t think I need to give you the full run down of his career.  But if you grew up in the 80’s and 90’s then you’ve heard or seen him. You may know him as Mork, you know him as the Genie, Mrs. Doubtfire… The list goes on.   But I do want to remind you that no matter how the media wants bend this tragedy that you should remember that he was always genius, an actor,  father,  fellow gamer and anime fan. He lived to share his love and talent with the world, spending time with us on the screen, and  in the desert with our troops through the USO. He’s made us laugh, cry and think.  Robin was a great man.

But like the rest of us he had his demons.  1 in 3 people suffer from depression and its a crippling mental disease that we cannot fix no matter how hard we try to deny it, drown it,  starve it,  drug it,  cut it out. Robin had been fighting this for years and it is heartbreaking to know that although he worked so hard to make us all laugh and feel loved, that he himself felt alone. No one so loved should ever feel alone.

I used to think the worst thing in life was to end up all alone. It’s not.  The worst thing in life is to end up with people who make you feel alone.

What we should take from this is that we shouldn’t be afraid to reach out or sit down and listen. The isn’t a magical immunity to sadness and depression.  There is help and it doesn’t come in a bottle. Please do not be afraid to ask for help.  There’s a plethora of help lines you can reach, in fact you can even message us on Facebook.  There are 9 of us here,  all very different,  I guarantee one of us knows what you’re going through. Supporting each other is the greatest good we can do in our community. Be like the Genie, be like Peter Pan, or Patch Adams or John Keating… Hell, even be Mork. Be positive in the world around you and the world will return the favor. But please don’t be afraid to admit weakness and ask for help.
